Nicolas and Maria

Back on the road we headed to Santa Fe de la Laguna, an indigenous (Purhepecha) and pottery community. There we visited the home of Nicolas Fabian Fermin and Maria del Rosario Lucas Bautista.

Nicolas etches and burnishes traditional imagery onto the molded forms made by Maria. Corn and fish and snails and apples...all things familiar in Wisconsin! Their beautiful lead-free work is some of our most popular. We have one small plate with flowers available on the Chiripa website. The corn platter below is available in the shop.
A new addition to Nicolas' and Maria's home and workshop included fun details like these fish on the rafters and walkways with stones forming a fish mosaic.

When we left this gracious home we drove through the center of the town to view one of the most impressive murals I've ever seen. The mosaic was executed by the townspeople. I am sorry to say that I do not know the name of the designer. Help me out if you know.

Quite an impressive piece of art in the small village.
